What does a typical day look like at an engineering summer program? At the IEEE TryEngineering Summer Institute, held in collaboration with NSLC, each day blends hands-on STEM learning, teamwork, and campus life to give high school students a full, immersive pre-college experience.
Starting the Day with Purpose
Students begin each morning with breakfast in a university dining hall, followed by a group meeting to set the tone for the day. This time helps them connect with instructors and peers, review project goals, and ask questions before diving into the day’s engineering challenges. A structured start helps students stay organized and focused while also building a sense of community within the group.
Hands-On Engineering in Action
The core of the day is dedicated to project-based learning. Students spend the morning diving into activities that introduce key concepts across electrical, mechanical, civil, and aeronautical engineering. Instead of sitting through long lectures, students quickly move into building and testing their ideas, such as creating custom 3D-printed parts for a race car and then putting their designs into action. This active learning approach keeps students engaged and encourages problem-solving through doing.
Afternoon Projects and Exploration
After lunch, the learning continues with additional project work or special activities such as off-campus visits. Students collaborate on larger group “Sparking Solutions” projects, giving them the opportunity to design and refine their ideas over time. Whether they’re launching rockets or enhancing earlier designs, afternoons are focused on creativity, teamwork, and applying skills in new ways.
Time to Recharge and Connect
Late afternoon provides time to unwind and connect with others. Students check in with advisors, enjoy outdoor time, or explore campus facilities. This balance between structured learning and downtime helps participants recharge while building friendships and confidence in a college-like environment.
Evenings Full of Energy and Community
Evenings bring the entire group together for fun, low‑pressure activities such as games, movies, creative challenges, and social events. Students end the night in the residence halls with free time to relax, reflect, and get ready for the next day of engineering exploration.
An Experience That Lasts
Every day at the TryEngineering Summer Institute combines hands-on engineering, teamwork, and meaningful social connection. Students leave with new technical skills, stronger confidence, lasting friendships, and a memorable introduction to college‑level STEM learning.
