Bridge Engineering Challenge

Students dive into the fundamentals of bridge design by experimenting with materials and structural techniques to build bridges that can withstand heavy loads. As one of the most popular activities in our civil engineering module, this hands-on challenge encourages creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. The winning team earns bragging rights and a celebratory pizza party!

Learning Objectives

01

Civil Engineering Principles

Demonstrate the ability to apply civil engineering principles and key concepts, such as how bridges support weight, how different materials react to stress, and the importance of strong foundations.

02

Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking Skills

Identify and troubleshoot design flaws, adapt plans as needed, and work collaboratively to overcome obstacles.

03

Spark Interest in STEM Fields

Develop a deeper appreciation for the principles of civil engineering and potentially spark a lifelong interest in the field.

Design Think Challenge

Students dive into the full Design Thinking process, an innovative, human-centered approach to solving real-world problems. From identifying challenges and reframing them as “How Might We…” questions to brainstorming, prototyping, and pitching their ideas, campers work in teams to develop creative, impactful solutions. The experience culminates in a high-energy presentation competition judged by STEM professionals.

Learning Objectives

01

Real World Problem Solving

Demonstrate the ability to effectively navigate the stages of Design Thinking, from identifying and defining a problem to developing and prototyping potential solutions.

02

Critical Thinking Skills

Think creatively, generate innovative ideas, and critically evaluate solutions by considering factors like feasibility, user needs, and potential impact.

03

Communication & Presentation Skills

Develop the ability to effectively communicate ideas to an audience, articulate the value of their solutions, and persuasively present work to others.
