Discover Different Engineering Disciplines

At the TryEngineering Summer Institute, students embark on an exciting journey through the diverse world of engineering. With hands-on projects, our comprehensive curriculum will introduce them to several fields of engineering, including aerospace, civil, electrical, and mechanical. They’ll have fun tackling a variety of engineering design challenges while developing skills in engineering, communication, and consensus-building.

Aerospace Engineering
Ignite your teen’s passion for flight with our aerospace engineering module! During the “Glider & Wing Design” engineering project, students will leverage the fundamental principles of flight to design and construct a glider. Then, they’ll test to see if their gliders are capable of carrying a significant payload. Plus, campers in past years at our Rice University location have been treated to an exclusive tour of the NASA Johnson Space Center led by a retired Apollo propulsion engineer!

Civil Engineering

Through engaging design challenges, our students experience aspects of civil engineering firsthand by collaborating on exciting civil engineering projects under the guidance of our staff and guest speakers. They will even have the opportunity to witness engineering in action with fascinating behind-the-scenes tours and field trips in order to observe how real civil engineers tackle complex problems and translate theory into reality.

Electrical Engineering

Electricity plays an enormous impact in today’s society. From renewable energy solutions to cutting-edge robotics, our program explores how these technologies are shaping the future. Students will learn soldering techniques while constructing a functional radio, build and program a drone, and design a smart car equipped with sensors in order to gain hands-on experience with basic circuitry and breadboarding.

Mechanical Engineering

Does your teen enjoy tinkering, building, and problem-solving? With our mechanical engineering activities, your teen will explore the science behind the intricate workings of a simple machine to the complex engineering behind cutting-edge technologies. For example, in the “Hydraulic Robot Arm Challenge,” students will design and build a sophisticated hydraulic robot arm in order to test their problem-solving skills and deepen their understanding of engineering principles.
