Local Tours and Attractions
Where can Institute students expect to visit? Here is what we have done in previous summers! This summer will be similar; call us for specific details!
LaGuardia Airport – The 21st busiest airport in the United States, located in the northern part of the New York City borough of Queens. We toured the airport facility and view the recent construction that is part of a massive renovation project. Escorted by NY and NJ Port Authority representatives, we saw how the airport conversion is turning LGA into a modern air transportation facility. We also had an opportunity to see other airport facilities and even venture onto the tarmac to see aircraft landing and taking off.
Con Edison East River Generating Station – Located in Manhattan, on the East River, this power plant provides electricity and steam to the New York City metropolitan area. Accompanied by a plant engineer, we toured the facility to view the boilers, steam turbines and generators in action as they meet the utility needs of New Yorkers. We learned about the cycle to generate electricity and about career opportunities in the power industry. Afterwards we explored Manhattan together and got dinner in Little Italy. Its the engineering school NY loves!
What can Summer Institute students expect for weekend activities?
We'll spend Saturday exploring Manhattan! First we plan to check out the One World Observatory, the Oculus, and the 9/11 Memorial. After that, we'll break into small groups and head to different destinations in the city. Have you been to Times Square? Taken a ride on the Staten Island Ferry and seen the Statue of Liberty? Walked through Central Park? Based on student interest, availability, and weather, we'll pack this day with as much as we can and take advantage of the great things NYC has to offer.
On Sunday, we'll relax at one of Brooklyn's most iconic destinations: Coney Island. Relax on the beach, walk the boardwalk, try a Nathan's Famous hot dog, or ride the fun amusement park rides. This is a student favorite!
