TryEngineering Summer Institute

An exciting two-week, on-campus engineering camp for high school students held at three premier universities across the United States in 2019.

Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology

Specialized Aeronautics and Engineering College in New York

A private, specialized aeronautics and engineering college, Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology is located adjacent to LaGuardia Airport in East Elmhurst, Queens, New York. Classes are led by an experienced and passionate faculty in a newly renovated, state-of-the-art campus. TryEngineering Summer Institute students enjoy access to Vaughn's flight simulator, as well as the opportunity to get an up close look at aeronautics engineering at LaGuardia. It's a perfect location for our New York engineering summer camp.

Plus, the campus' proximity to New York City attractions makes Vaughn an exciting destination for Summer Institute students.

Where can Institute students expect to visit?

LaGuardia Airport – The 21st busiest airport in the United States, located in the northern part of the New York City borough of Queens. We'll tour the airport facility and view the recent construction that is part of a massive renovation project. Escorted by NY and NJ Port Authority representatives, we'll see how the airport conversion is turning LGA into a modern air transportation facility. We will also have an opportunity to see other airport facilities and even venture onto the tarmac to see aircraft landing and taking off.

Con Edison East River Generating Station – Located in Manhattan, on the East River, this power plant provide electricity and steam to the New York City metropolitan area. Accompanied by a plant engineer, we'll tour the facility to view the boilers, steam turbines and generators in action as they meet the utility needs of New Yorkers. We will learn about the cycle to generate electricity and about career opportunities in the power industry.

What can Institute students expect for weekend activities?

We'll spend Saturday exploring Manhattan! First we plan to check out the One World Observatory, the Oculus, and the 9/11 Memorial. After that, we'll break into small groups and head to different destinations in the city. Have you been to Times Square? Rode the Staten Island Ferry and seen the Statue of Liberty? Walked through Central Park? Based on student interest, availability, and weather, we'll pack this day with as much as we can and take advantage of the great things NYC has to offer.

On Sunday, we'll relax at one of Brooklyn's most iconic destinations: Coney Island. Relax on the beach, walk the boardwalk, try a Nathan's Famous hot dog, or ride the fun amusement park rides. This is a student favorite!
