Research-Intensive Flagship University
Texas A&M is a research-intensive flagship university dedicated to sending leaders out into the world, prepared to take on the challenges of tomorrow. This premier university offers almost 400 degree programs, including many highly-ranked engineering programs. The main campus in College Station is located in the heart of the Houston-Dallas-Austin triangle. It is home to more than 62,500 students each year. In 2015, Texas A&M was ranked #1 nationally in Money Magazine’s "Great Schools You Can Actually Get Into" list.
TryEngineering Summer Institute students at our Texas engineering camp at Texas A&M not only enjoy the impressive facilities on campus, they are also near the heart of the United States space program, and past students have enjoyed visits to NASA and Johnson Space Center. In fact, last year's students even spent time with an engineer that worked on the Apollo program!
Where can Institute students expect to visit?
NASA Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston – We will visit this famed facility that has been the center of all US human spaceflight for more than 50 years. On a guided behind-the-scenes tour, conducted by a retired Apollo propulsion engineer who helped get astronauts to the Moon, we'll visit Mission Control, the Space Vehicle Mock-up Facility where current astronauts train and the historic Rocket Park to see the Saturn V moon rocket. We will have access to Space Center Houston and all of the artifacts and displays that trace US achievements in space and how engineers and scientists have contributed. The visit will also coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing and there will be many special exhibits and events.
Texas A&M Central Utility Plant – This combined heat and power plant provides all of the electric power needs as well as heating and hot water for the Texas A&M campus. On the tour, we will see first-hand the boilers, steam turbines and generators used for electric power generation. We'll meet engineers who will explain the cycle of generating electricity and provide insight into careers in the power industry.
What can Institute students expect for weekend activities?
Located right in College Station, Grand Station is the largest entertainment venue in the area, offering a unique experience to bowl, play and unwind. Students can bowl on one of Grand Station's 40 state-of-the-art bowling lanes, play with their amazing virtual reality gaming system, participate in the incredible laser tag arena, and challenge their skills in an interactive arcade experience.
On Sunday, we like to keep it local and make use of all the great facilities on campus. We'll make the trek across campus and spend the afternoon in the rec center, which has a rock climbing wall, gymnasium, fitness center and pool, then spend the rest of the day relaxing, catching up on laundry, and recharging for the exciting week ahead!
