A Unique College Campus Experience
Study and live at UPenn, Rice, and USD and get the chance to have a real college experience. The IEEE TryEngineering Summer Institute engineering program provides the ideal atmosphere for exploring your academic interests, making new friends, introducing college campus life, and building a sense of confidence and independence. If you are looking at an engineering camp for your high school student where you’ll explore various engineering fields, such as electrical, civil, mechanical, and aerospace. Check out the IEEE TryEngineering Summer Institute. Our engineering summer camp allows for you to meet and work alongside real life professional engineers, which can be a rewarding experience not found at other engineering camps. Learn more about our program and the customized curriculum created by the geniuses at IEEE!
Personal Growth and Development:
This program is far more than just engineering; we are out to cause personal breakthroughs with each student, including:
Confidence: During the TryEngineering Summer Institute, students will work in teams doing a lot of projects and builds. Before each project, they learn the principles involved, and they predict in their engineer’s notebook how it will go. They document the build ongoingly, and then they debrief how it went, and if their predicted outcomes were correct. They then look to see what is missing, or could be altered, such that their project would have been more successful. This process of predicting, documenting and debriefing creates a level of confidence that will serve these students forever, even if they do not become engineers. Engineers plan, test, and refine their designs to ensure that their solutions meet the needs of the users. Students will learn alongside and from their peers, as they collaborate and support each others’ designs. Students’ confidence and creativity will naturally grow throughout the program.
New Friends: Our students are cut from the same cloth: We have found that most of the students are very similar in disposition, outlook and personality. This commonality allows us to create a strong sense of community with each session’s students. By meeting engineering professionals, and having the time to explore their interests, our students get to discover what aspect of engineering they prefer, if any, and they get a roadmap for how to get from where they are to where they want to go. What is most important though is, the students get to find their people. They walk out transformed, with a whole new set of skills and a new group of friends.
College Majors and Beyond: Many of our students use this program as a way to test if, and what type, of engineering best suits them. And they would rather find out now, than pay for a year or two of college, only to then discover they need to change majors. Explore engineering as a possible future... as it relates to topics like biotechnology, nanotech, renewable energy, robotics, rockets, lasers, and more to find the perfect fit for your future.
We do not want our students getting to college and wasting a year or two of tuition only to discover they don't like what they are studying... our program gives them the chance to discover if and what aspects of engineering appeal to them, right now.
Collaboration and teamwork: For our Shark Tank-style competition, students must discover and develop skills in collaboration, problem-solving, and teamwork. They work together each day, building towards the final presentation. The only way this works is when they work together!
Responsibility: We treat each student individually and with respect; and we expect the students to be responsible for themselves. We treat them individually, and we work with them directly.
Empowerment: We strive to empower each and every student, from wherever they are when they arrive. One way to do that is to have them discover their voice, and to know themselves as someone who can ask for what they need, no matter what. We support them in finding and using their voice in ways many of them could literally never imagine before arriving, and this provides access to power.
Problem-Solving: Develop the mindset and skills needed to tackle complex challenges with confidence and creativity. Learn to predict builds and debrief outcomes, a skill that applies everywhere in life.
Leadership: Develop yourself as a leader, learn to lead teams, speak in front of groups, and use your voice confidently. Be ready to take on whatever comes your way while gaining a greater sense of responsibility, accountability, and self-expression

Testimonials
“I feel like I know have a great understanding of what it’s like to attend a college and left with a spark in me to create more things with my own two hands after our classroom sessions." - 2018 Student
"Luke thoroughly enjoyed TESI and returned from the camp with a spring in his step. The program cemented his belief that he can do it, and he has since applied to study engineering at university and has already been accepted to a couple of his top choices. Luke found the atmosphere uplifting, the content fun and the field trip really amazing. The staff were attentive and engaging. I encourage any child who is curious about the world of engineering to consider TESI. It was a very rewarding experience for our son, and we were so grateful that he could gain confidence in his choice for the future in such a wonderful setting." - 2018 Parent who updated us in 2022
"I loved the experience, I made friends during the program and connections through IEEE that I enjoyed and cannot wait to continue to pursue the field of Electrical Engineering." - 2022 Student
