IEEE Engineering Summer Institute:  Schedules Example by Day

Time Itinerary
8:00 - 8:45 Breakfast for Residential Students
Day Student drop-off:  8:45am-9:00am
9:00 Morning Meeting IEEE Engineering Summer Camp -  plan the day, go over the projects, ask any questions, prepare and create the day.
9:00-Noon Hands-on engineering projects and activities are always the focus.  Virtually no lecture other than introducing the science behind the build.  Then we start hands-on building objects that explore the 4 major areas of Engineering, electrical, mechanical, civil and aeronautic engineering.

Example:  3D Printing of a multiple custom parts for a race car (and racing it!)

Noon-1:00 Lunch - healthy hot meals in the University Dining Hall with full hot line, vegetarian options, etc.
1:00-4:00 Hands-on engineering projects and activities or off-campus field trip.

Every day includes work on their group projects to prepare for the competition on the last day.

Example: Design, Prototype, Build and Launch Custom Rockets and more.

4:00-5:30 Check in with RAs, Outdoor time, sports and/or free time (pool, climbing wall, etc).  Time to bond and explore the University offerings.

Day Student pick-up 4-4:30pm

Weekly Sample Schedule:

Time Itinerary
Day 1 Residential check-in: 1–3pm Campus tour with teachers Hands-on engineering projects and activities Overview IEEE Engineering Summer Institute Dinner (all students) Activities (all students)

Competition Introduction: On the first day we introduce and begin the first steps in forming groups and making plans.

Engineer’s Notebook:  Every student is issued their own TESI Engineers Notebook.  This is critical because it is where the real learning occurs. In Step 1, the students predict what will happen in any particular challenge.  Step 2, they document everything in action.  Step 3, they debrief and look for ways to improve performance.  This process creates whole new strategies for thinking and working that will serve the students for a lifetime.

Day Students Check-in 2-3pm and pick-up 7pm

Day 2
Intro to Electrical Engineering:  3D Printing Challenge: Circuit Board Challenge: In this activity we’ll solder breadboards, then take it to the next level and focus on applying the basics of electrical engineering.  We will solder the circuits so the work is permanent. Students work in teams to set up and practice soldering, and then move on to soldering a functional circuit. This activity provides a basic understanding of soldering techniques for electrical circuitry.

Competition: Students will begin by exploring problems that can be solved by engineering. They will choose partners, and learn about the requirements of the final project, which include pitching their idea to a team of engineers.

Day 3 Hydrogen Cell: Students will explore environmental engineering by learning about one solution to decarbonization by using electrical engineering concepts to capture green hydrogen gas.

Biomedical Engineering: Students will combine sensor technology with mechanical engineering concepts to design a solution for the healthcare industry.

Competition:  Student continue planning; building, running 3D printers, start building the presentation, begin practicing the descriptions.

Day 4
Intro to Civil Engineering. Bridge Build:  Students will learn how structures such as bridges are designed to handle large loads.Students work in teams to design, build, and test a bridge. They test load, consider their achievements and challenges and those of their camp mates, and wrap up the activity with team discussion.

Competition: Students teams will work to revise their solution to the identified problem and begin to build their prototype.

Day 5
Machine Learning: Students will explore machine learning, that is, artificial intelligence. They will connect programming, signal processing and mechanical engineering to teach their computers to sort concrete objects.

Aerospace Engineering: In this classic IEEE TryEngineering activity, teams of two students are challenged with building a glider using simple materials and physics knowledge. Students enjoy the culminating competition determining whose glider traveled the furthest, and exploring what impacted their performance.

Speaker Series:  Engineers visit the students to talk about their path to their career and answer students’ questions.

Day 6 Off-campus Field Trip:  Ride in coach buses to places like the Johnson Space Center.NASA, Boeing, Philadelphia International Airport, Qulacomm Leonardo Helicopters and more.  Go where no school group can buy a ticket, meet the real engineers behind the scenes and meet them at their job!Field Trip off-campus in AC Coach buses.  We go where civilians cannot just buy tickets like other programs.  We meet with real engineers at their jobs, to places like Boeing, Leonardo Helicopters, and more.
Day 7 Mechanical Engineering: Students build a hydraulic-powered robot arm, in this build-from-scratch activity. Student teams work together to follow directions and assemble a fully functional robot arm, with no electricity involved.

Competition: Students teams will test their prototype and finalize their pitch, by creating and practicing their presentation and demonstration.

Day 8 Competition Day!
Get ready for an electrifying Competition Day! We kick off the morning with an intense round of polishing presentations, honing our delivery skills, and gearing up for an epic showdown. The adrenaline is pumping as we prepare to begin at 3:30pm, eagerly awaiting the crowning of the ultimate winner.

Post-showdown, it's back to the residence hall for an epic hangout session and good times, bringing everyone together for a night to remember. The excitement continues as we all gather for a communal dinner, seamlessly blending the dorm and day student experiences. It's a day of fierce competition, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments!  Day student pickup at 7:30 pm.

Day 9 Move out, pack up, say goodbye, check out by 12 noon
